‘Hang on’ は単に ’待つ’という意味ですが、短い時間を表現する際に使います。
Conversation 1
a: “Are you ready to go yet?
b: “No, hang onwhile I find my keys.
a: “Ok, but hurry up!”
a: “出かける準備はもう出来た?”
b: “いや、鍵探しているからちょっと待って”
a: “OK,でも急いで!”
Conversation 2
Often we use it with a phrase about time to show how long we are going to be.
時間がどれ位かかるかを知らせる時に使う。
a: “Are you coming?”
b: “Hang ona minute, I’m not ready.
a: “準備出来た?”
b: “いや、ちょっと待って、まだ準備が出来てない。
Conversation 3
We also use it with the words “a tick” (meaning a second, like the ‘tick-tock’ of a clock) “a sec” (second) or “a mo” (moment) for something that will happen in a very short time.
そして”a tick”という言葉ともよく一緒に使う。(時計の秒針が ‘tick-tock’ する間、つまりほんの一瞬の間という意味)。
他にも “a sec” (second) もしくは “a mo” (moment)も、すぐ後に起きる事に対して使えます。
a: “Have you finished that work yet?”
b: “No, hang ona mo I’m just finishing now.
a: “Good.”
a: “それもう終ったの?”
b: “いや, もう少し待ってね。すぐ終るから。
a: “OK”
Conversation 4
Because “Hang on” is a phrasal verb we can use it in different tenses if we change the tense of ‘hang’.
“Hang on”は句動詞なので、状況によって “hang”の時制を変えられます。
a: “Are you coming?”
b: “No, I’m just hanging on(waiting) for the washing machine to finish.”
a: “How long will it be?
b: “Not long, just a tick.”
(present progressive)
a: “終った?”
b: “まだ、洗濯機が終るのを待っているとこよ。”
a: “どれ位かかりそう?
b: “そんなにかからないと思う、もうちょっと”
(現在進行形)
a: “Did you see John?”
b: “No, I hung on (waited) for as long as I could, but I had to catch a bus.
(past tense)
a: “ジョンに会った?”
b: “いや、ぎりぎりまで待っていたけど、バスに乗らなきゃいけなかったから“
(過去時制)
